Super Bowl XXXIV

The GeorgiaDome, January 30, 2000

Grammy Award Winner and top country music recording artist Faith Hill likes bagpipes and wanted pipes to introduce and accompany her National Anthem performance at the Super Bowl. The Atholl Highlanders Pipes and Drums of Stone Mountain, Georgia, were selected to perform with Faith for this, the biggest song on the most watched television program in the world! Faith appears in the rehearsal photo below.

Many band members are ex-military, and we have a pseudo-military appearance. However, we scrambled for two weeks cleaning, polishing, fine tuning everything and rehearsing for this appearance! About 72,000 people live and 200 million television viewers around the world witnessed our performance! Founded in 1981, the Atholl Highlanders have been seen by millions in parades, performances, and network television, but more people saw us in this one performance than in all 19 years of our existence combined!

The melody range of the National Anthem exceeds the range of the pipes, so we played a four measure pipe and drum introduction and chordal accompaniment for Faith's vocal rendition.

The Super Bowl pre-game show featured the Smothers Brothers, Travis Tritt, Tina Turner and hundreds of dancers! The excitement of being on the field and part of the excitement in this professionally produced show is something we shall never forget. The experience has made all of us better entertainers!
